This etching is one of a hundred made by Picasso for the Vollard Suite, a landmark in his printmaking career. The work, made during his passionate affair with his model, Marie-Thérèse Walter, reveals Picasso’s obsession with the intellectual and sexual aspects of an artist’s creative process. The mythical figure of the Minotaur represents lust, whilst the precise draughtsmanship might be seen as indicating cool rationality. Recalling figures on classical Greek vases, the reclining Minotaur regards the viewer and toasts his conquest.
