This drawing features a recurrent motif the artist affectionately calls ‘fag puddles,’ still-lives of dismembered bodies seemingly melting into one another (a similar work is Fag Puddle with Candle, Shoe, and Flag, Metropolitan Museum, inv. no. 2023.80). In this work, what may initially appear to be an intimate scene of lovers’ intertwining limbs, becomes almost grotesque as a disconnected hand with painted nails drapes over the left head, and a leg wraps around the puddle of limbs, the foot emerging through the foregrounded bent arm. Regardless of their current state, the faces express a certain ease, as if accustomed to having their sublime discomfort on full display, their bodies contorted into an anatomically impossible embrace.
