Label Text
Saint Matthew, one of Christ’s twelve Apostles, is represented as an Evangelist, pointing to a passage in his Gospel. An angel kneels at his feet, writing on a scroll. The elegance of the saint’s clothes, hair and drapery, and the finely observed details such as the book binding and stitching are typical of Netherlandish late Gothic sculpture.
Although carved in the round, the figure was intended to be seen primarily from the front, as the back is in much flatter relief. It could have been part of a church screen.
