This table-top sculpture is made up of several plates of shorn and rusty off-cuts of rolled steel welded together. The irregular shapes are poised on the edge of the base and appear to cling on to each other precariously. In the 1970s Caro began to experiment with rolled steel. He initially created large ground-based works called Flats, which had to be assembled by a crane operator. In 1974 he made a series of innovative table-top pieces, such as this, which challenged received ideas about the relationship between sculptures and their pedestals. This work was the first major gift to The Courtauld Gallery by a leading contemporary artist.
