Cast number 6 (of an edition of 13 made
for the Musée Rodin, Paris)
Lillian Browse Bequest, 2006
This figurine is thought to record the last of
a series of visits made by Vaslav Nijinsky,
principal dancer of the Ballets Russes, to
Rodin’s studio in the summer of 1912, to
thank him for his public support of the ballet
Après-midi d’un faune in which he danced
the controversial role of the faun. Nijinsky’s
powerful dancing style and explosive energy
is brilliantly captured in this tiny portrait of
the dancer caught in mid movement.

Provenance
