This portrait head depicts Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) who left his London townhouse, Home House, and his collection of masterpieces of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art to the newly founded Courtauld Institute. The sculptor Benno Elkan studied in Munich and Paris before moving to England in 1933 after the Nazis came to power.

Commissioned from the artist in 1946. Samuel Courtauld Bequest, 1948.
