This portrait head depicts Viscount Lee of Fareham (1868-1947) who together with Samuel Courtauld and others founded and endowed the Courtauld Institute with their magnificent gifts and bequests. Elkan also made a portrait head of Samuel Courtauld. The sculptor Benno Elkan studied in Munich and Paris before moving to England in 1933 after the Nazis came to power.
