In the first century the traditional funeral rite was cremation and funerary monuments usually took the form of an urn or altar standing in a family cemetery.
This marble altar is ornamented with symbols of ritual sacrifice; an inscription records its erection by Lucceia Hebene in memory of her husband, Marcus Lucceius Optatus, and of their daughter who died at the age of five years and three months.
