The infant Christ lies in his mother's lap and raises his hand in the sign of blessing. Typically this gesture occurs with the Child held in an upright position. Here the Child’s unsteady placement on the Virgin’s lap is so awkward that it would seem to suggest he is a substitute for the original baby, even if one carved in a similar style at roughly the same date. Although the work has been repainted over the centuries, considerable areas of original pigment are still preserved, as well as traces of gilding.
