Label Text
These carved wooden footmen, dressed in livery and holding torches, were designed to illuminate a doorway. This use of carved figures is commonly associated with Venice, but these footmen display the type of playful charm often seen in the Baroque art and architecture of Austria and Southern Germany. Much of the original colour is lost and the gilding is perhaps modern.
Provenance
Lee of Fareham, Arthur Hamilton (1st Viscount) (ante 1938)
