Label Text

The sculptor first made a study in lead of these two heads, before carving the block of red Mansfield sandstone into this bold and original form, which reflects his wide interest in art outside the Western tradition. Samuel Courtauld purchased Two Heads directly from the artist’s Chelsea studio at a time when Dobson’s fame and success were increasing and he was seen to be in the forefront of the avant-garde.
