Made in Egypt or possibly Italy, this bust mixes elements derived from ancient Greece, such as the modelling of the facial features, with Egyptian motifs such as the headdress. It was probably cut from a block of marble previously used for an architectural purpose and the unfinished back suggests that it may have been placed within a niche.
The bust was displayed in the vestibule of Samuel Courtauld’s London townhouse, Home House, in Portman Square.
