This portrait captures the beauty and vibrancy of the celebrated modern art dealer and scholar Lillian Browse (1906-2005). Her major bequest to the Courtauld Gallery includes paintings, drawings and sculpture. Mané Katz was one of the first artists to befriend Browse when she started her career as a young dealer visiting the studios of Paris. She later recalled that Katz painted this portrait as she wandered around his studio casually chatting to him.
