Label Text

Roger Fry was active as a painter, notably of portraits, but it was as an art critic and aesthetic theorist that he was most influential in the first decades of the 20th century. In this, one of several self-portraits, he depicts himself with an expression of intense visual scrutiny. Fry bequeathed a large amount of his collection to the Courtauld and his daughter, Pamela Diamond, supplemented it with important later donations.
