Vaughan first visited Greece in 1960 and returned on several occasions. The experience of sailing around the Greek islands had a profound effect upon his landscape painting, pushing his work towards abstraction. In this composition, based upon the island of Delos, he treats the wide expanses of sea and sky as large colour fields. Along the central line of the horizon a cluster of light and dark blocks and patches of colour suggest the island itself, famous for its ancient Minoan and Greek ruins.
