This oil sketch depicts the church of Notre Dame de Grèves in Le Pollet, the fisherman’s quarter of Dieppe. It demonstrates Sickert’s preference for painting apparently mundane subjects in a low-keyed palette. Although subdued in tone, he gives full weight to the subtlety and delicacy of the varied colours to be found on even this grey day in Dieppe.
