Label Text

This small panel depicts the triangular roofed bathing huts on the beach at Dieppe, and the line of the town’s promenade. Painted relatively early in Sickert’s career, the influence of Whistler is apparent in the choice of subject matter and limited tonal register. However, Sickert’s emphasis upon the structure and geometry of the composition demonstrates his increasing concern for developing a more disciplined method of execution, which moved away from Whistler’s more impressionistic technique.
