This delicate early still life demonstrates the impact of Whistler’s artistic principles upon the young artist. The muted tones and impressionistic rendering of the flowers and vase were techniques learnt by Sickert whilst working as Whistler’s pupil and assistant during this period. The painting was given to the Courtauld by the well-known art dealer and Sickert scholar, Lillian Browse, along with several other works by the artist also on display in this room.
