This painting originally formed part of a fan. A small curving indentation can be seen at the upper right, where the fan’s silk support was once trimmed in an arc.
The dancer performs before a backdrop of a rocky shoreline and the sun setting over water, in an unidentified ballet. Degas’s use of metallic paint enhances the sense of artificiality and performance.
