Daubigny specialised in river views. In 1857, he acquired a small boat he used as a floating studio and explored the rivers around his home of Auvers, northwest of Paris. Daubigny moored in places where the landscape struck him as providing an ideal composition for a painting.
The horizontal format of this picture enables the artist to capture a vast expanse of sky and a sweeping view of a river, almost certainly the Oise, with wooded banks
