This large landscape by Paul Cézanne shows a village seen across a pattern of fields and trees. A winding road leads the viewer from the foreground to the roofs and church steeple in the distance. The unfinished appearance of the canvas may be deliberate. In the same year that he painted this work, Cézanne explained that his use of colour to render light forced him to ‘produce abstract passages that stop me from covering my whole canvas’. Such rejection of academic rules contributed to Cézanne’s posthumous reputation as the ‘father of modernism’.
