This composition was intended for the high altar of the church dedicated to St Pascual Baylon. The saint, praying in an arid garden, sees an angel holding a monstrance (a gilded container holding the communion bread or wafer). Tiepolo’s image reflects the austerity of the church’s friars, emphasised by the contrast between Pascual’s plain robes and the luminous angel. The saint’s gardening hoe recalls the importance the Franciscans attached to manual labour.
