Label Text

The Christ Child is usually shown in Mary’s lap, but here Tiepolo depicts him with his earthly father Joseph. This choice reflects the Alcantarine friars’ strong devotion to St Joseph.
The detailed natural setting, with Joseph’s tools, pine trees and a mountainous landscape, adds pathos to the composition. This realism is a recurring feature of Tiepolo’s late works.
