Saint Clement, fourth Pope of the Catholic Church, was sentenced to death by the emperor Trajan who ordered that Clement be tied to an anchor and thrown in the sea. As he awaits his execution, he has a vision of the Holy Trinity.
This sketch is an early design for an altarpiece destined for the main altar of a convent church at Nymphenburg, in present-day Germany. The subject was probably chosen because the saint is the namesake of the church’s patron, Archbishop-Elector Clemens Augustus of Cologne
