Aloysius Gonzaga closes his eyes during an ecstatic vision of the communion bread, or wafer, which is transformed into Christ’s body during Mass. Gonzaga, an Italian Jesuit, had recently been made a saint and the Catholic Church’s patron of youth. Tiepolo probably made this painting speculatively, as a preliminary sketch for an altarpiece he hoped to persuade someone to commission from him. He retained it in his studio, later giving it to the family of his collaborator, the artist Antonio Fantoni.
