This large sketch is a design for the title page of a book of commentaries on the Gospel of Saint Luke published in 1628 in Antwerp. Luke appears in the top of the composition, flanked by the dove of the Holy Spirit and the figure of Truth. The skin of the ox, Luke’s traditional symbol, is spread to contain the title, to be added later by the engraver.
Of the fifty title pages designed by Rubens, only four were painted in grisaille, making the work a rare example of this technique.
