Rubens based this painting on a drawing by the German painter Adam Elsheimer. Rubens was a friend of Elsheimer, who was celebrated for his night scenes.
This scene is set in a classical temple, where a sacrifice is being made to the Roman gods of love and war. Rubens infuses the action with further drama through the light glowing from the centre of the picture. This highlights the crowd’s animated faces, and emphasises the sense of spectacle.
