This idyllic work shows the Holy Family resting under a tree during their flight from King Herod into Egypt. The Christ child tugs playfully at Joseph's beard while the donkey on which Mary travelled grazes in the background.
The popularity of this subject in the Renaissance seems to have been partly due to the opportunities it offered for the depiction of landscape at a time when nature had not yet emerged as an independent subject in Italian painting.
