This rapidly executed sketch was sold with the contents of Édouard Manet’s studio after his death. Although large areas of the canvas have been left unpainted, Manet is able to suggest with only a few brushstrokes of delicate colours the slight turn of the woman’s body and the outline of her dress. Just visible behind the woman is the profile of a second, male, figure. The woman has been identified as Marguerite de Conflans, whose family was close to Manet’s. She posed for him on several occasions.
