This canvas was painted on the artist’s first visit to Scotland. He lodged for a week in a highland farmhouse, finding this view at the junction of the Findhorn and Divie rivers, near Loch Ness. A postcard sent home from nearby Dulsie Bridge comments on the stormy weather and the wild natural setting. A few yards from where Kokoschka painted this scene is a stone commemorating the Moray floods which occurred exactly a century before he was there, adding an element of dramatic history to the turbulent work. Kokoschka returned to Scotland several times during World War II to paint further landscapes.

Provenance
