Solimena made this large oil sketch in preparation for one of several versions of the Assumption of the Virgin produced by his workshop.
For this sketch, Solimena concentrated on rendering the dramatic effect of the play of light and shade, and the almost theatrical poses and facial expressions of the apostles as they realise that Mary’s tomb is empty.
