The story of the early Christian martyrs Julitta and her three-year-old son Quiricus is rarely depicted. In the panel on the left, the mother and child are accused of embracing Christianity. In the central panel, Quiricus scratches the Roman governor’s face and is thrown to the floor. The one on the far right represents Julitta’s martyrdom. These horizontal panels formed part of the base (predella) of a complex altarpiece dedicated to Saint Quiricus.
