This panel is part of a set of three that once formed the predella (or base) for the main altar of a Florentine convent of Dominican nuns, dedicated to Saint Peter Martyr. In the two roundels are depicted Catherine of Alexandria and Agnes. The other two panels depict the dead Christ flanked by Mary Magdalen and Saint John the Evangelist, and a Dominican nun (probably Catherine of Siena) and saint Cecilia. The choice of these holy figures may have been influenced by the presence of their relics in the convent.
Provenance
Purchased in Florence by Thomas Gambier-Parry, 1860; by descent; Gambier-Parry Bequest to the Home House Trust (now the Samuel Courtauld Trust), 1966
