Roger Fry and other Bloomsbury Group artists often painted still lifes using everyday objects. Here, Fry experiments with collage, combining marbled paper with painting, inspired by his meeting with Pablo Picasso. The surprising placement of a banana suggests Fry was more concerned with shape and colour than a conventional arrangement.
