Signac moved to St-Tropez in 1892. He was the first Parisian artist to settle in this remote Mediterranean fishing village. He sought ‘sky, sea, the setting sun’ and a good anchorage for his boat, Olympia.
This is Signac’s preparatory study for a larger painting of the port at St-Tropez. The bold colours and technique of sketches like this had a significant impact on artists of the next generation, including Henri Matisse and André Derain.
