Group portraits were a popular genre in 18th-century England. Unsuitably named “conversation pieces”, they often feature static sitters in a sparsely furnished interior. The settings are not accurate depictions of contemporary homes but are meant to reflect the family’s fashionable taste, here represented by the landscape painting and the porcelain on the mantelpiece. The artist’s name is not known but his composition echoes those of the contemporary painter Arthur Devis.
