The precise origin of this portrait is unknown. A product of the artistic exchanges on either side of the Alps, it demonstrates its author’s knowledge of German portraiture but is equally close to Italian contemporary production in its technique and treatment of the drapery. Similarly, the identity of the sitter remains a mystery, though his elegant attire and sword suggest an aristocratic context. Only the date of the painting, inscribed on a tablet on the window sill, is secure.
