Label Text

Soest was born in the Netherlands and trained as an artist there before moving to England in the 1640s. As the English Civil War raged, Soest painted several military portraits. Here, the sitter in armour wears a red sash around his waist, an attribute often adopted by Royalist officers. The cavalry battle in the background probably alludes to a skirmish in which the unidentified man distinguished himself.
