Sir William Peere Williams, 2nd Baronet of Clapton and MP for New Shoreham, is shown wearing the uniform of the 16th Light Dragoons. This portrait was probably painted to commemorate the raising of the regiment in 1759, as hostilities increased during the Seven Years War.
Williams was killed in action against the French two years later, aged thirty-one.
