The identity of the young woman glancing at the viewer as she walks along a balcony is unknown. Her neat black silk dress with a large translucent collar covering her neck and shoulders is a typical example of Flemish fashion in the mid seventeenth century when Jacob van Oost was a sought-after portraitist in the city of Bruges. The woman holds the long veil of her huyck in one of her hands, adding to the sense of immediacy and the impression of elegance.
