                                This master was active in Florence, and probably trained with Pacino di Bonaguida.  Like Pacino, he was especially talented as a manuscript illuminator. This altarpiece shows his particular debt to Bernardo Daddi. 
None of the saints who surround the Virgin and Child are surprising choices. However, Mary Magdalen (at the far right) was first painted as Saint Margaret, as the inscription below her states. Margaret’s attribute, a dragon, can also still be seen.
