The sitter’s rich doublet of expensive black cloth, his finely embroidered shirt cuffs, and opulent hat are markers of his high social status. This is further underlined by the hooded falcon resting on his arm. Ownership of these hunting birds was associated with noble rank.
The man stands before bare tree trunks set against a deep turquoise background. The oak leaves (rovere) suggest that he might belong to the prominent Italian della Rovere family.
