Daniel Lysons wears the robes of a Doctor of Civil Law, a degree he received from Oxford University in 1759. He was also a licensed physician and, after leaving Oxford, practiced medicine in Gloucester and Bath. It is not clear why he is holding an iris, although preparations from this plant were used in the 18th century to treat gout and joint pain.
This is one of Tilly Kettle’s earliest portraits, executed shortly before he left for India (where the double portrait displayed nearby was painted).
