The bold fields of colour and expressive black lines relate this work to Fauvism, the first avant-garde artistic movement of the twentieth century. The reduction of the trees to near abstract patterns also suggests an awareness of early Cubism. Derain is known to have visited Carrieres Saint-Denis with the Cubist painter Georges Braque. This work was bought by the painter and critic Roger Fry and was shown in his influential Post-Impressionist Exhibition of 1910-11.
