Pierre Bonnard is known primarily as a painter of interiors. Later in his career however, he
became increasingly interested in depicting landscape and, by 1935, even described himself
as having ‘acquired a landscapist’s soul’. This work may have been painted in Le Cannet in
the south of France, where Bonnard was to buy a house in 1925. The rich colours herald
the expressive freedom of his late work. His notebooks record his intense observation of
nature and a sensitivity to the changing colour effects of shadow and sunlight that are so
evident in this work.
