Grant was one of the painters chosen by Roger Fry and Clive Bell for the British section of the Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition in 1912. Grant's six exhibits showed the range of influences which had transformed him into a modern artist, including Picasso, Matisse and Vuillard. The highly accomplished facetted brushwork of this painting shows the influence of Cezanne, described by Roger Fry as 'the great genius of the [modern] movement'.
