It was an encounter with paintings by Paul Cézanne in 1906 that kindled Roger Fry’s interest in modernism. The artist would remain a lodestar for Fry for his creation of a ‘new pictorial beauty’. Here, in an act of homage, he copied a self-portrait by Cézanne that was acquired by the National Gallery in 1925 with funds given by Samuel Courtauld.
