Many of Boudin’s pictures depict clusters of Parisian fashionable figures on holiday in the beach resorts of Normandy. Claiming that ‘three brush strokes from nature are worth more than three days in the studio’, Boudin painted on small wood panels that were easy to transport and store, enabling him to paint outdoors. In this example, the rapid and thin brushwork gives the scene a sense of immediacy and spontaneity.
