One of Bell’s few works to reference an urban setting, the roof and chimney glimpsed through the window have been identified as the view from her studio in Paris, where she worked in the 1920s. Against the sunlit background, Bell rendered the objects in her still life – ceramic vessels, flowers and patterned curtains – in the rich, sombre palette she favoured in the years following the First World War.
This is the only work by Bell to have been owned by Samuel Courtauld, who purchased it directly from an exhibition at the London Artists’ Association in 1926.
