Label Text

This dish is a painting in miniature, with an exceptional variety of colour, expressive figures, beautifully rendered textures and a dramatic crowd scene. On the back, angels hover in and out of clouds, carrying symbols of Christ’s Passion (Death and Resurrection).

This dish of the crucifixion of Christ between two thieves has on the reverse images of angels carrying the instruments of the Passion. It may have been used as a paten or flat dish on which the bread of the Eucharist (or Last Supper) is placed during the mass.
